Adopt-a-Plant Alberta (APA) is a non-profit program initiated in 2005 to address the need to gather more information on rare plants and lichens in Alberta. The program trains and supports volunteer plant enthusiasts to locate and record observations of rare plants across the province. The program also supports provincial and federal recovery teams in implementing recovery actions (populations surveys, habitat stewardship initiatives) for ‘at risk’ plant species, supports provincial resource managers and private land stewardship organizations (e.g., Nature Conservancy of Canada) in conducting surveys for rare plants on their lands, and supports other grassroots organizations with undertaking plant conservation initiatives. The data collected by the program is provided to the Alberta Natural Heritage Information Centre (Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation) and can be used in detailed status assessments of these species and to prioritize conservation action toward these species.
